A double-breasted suit should feel structured, clean and confident without looking stiff or restrictive. The right fit is about balance: sharp shoulders, a clean chest, a defined waist and trousers that fall neatly through the leg.
At SUITD London, our double-breasted suits are tailored ready-to-wear styles designed to give you that strong silhouette from the start, with alterations available where needed to refine the fit.

How should a double-breasted jacket fit?
1. The shoulders should sit cleanly
The shoulder seam should finish close to the edge of your natural shoulder. If the jacket hangs beyond your shoulder, it can look oversized. If it pulls inward or creates visible creasing, it may be too small.
A well-fitting shoulder gives the jacket its structure and sets the shape for the rest of the suit.
2. The chest should lie flat
When the jacket is fastened, the front should sit cleanly across the chest without obvious pulling around the buttons. The lapels should lie flat against your chest rather than lifting or bowing away.
Some shape through the torso is expected, but the jacket should still feel comfortable enough to move, sit and stand naturally.
3. The waist should look defined, not tight
One of the strengths of a double-breasted suit is the strong V-shaped silhouette it can create. The jacket should follow the waist and give definition without creating an exaggerated hourglass shape or pulling across the front.
If the shoulders and chest fit well but the waist feels slightly loose, this is often something that can be refined through alteration.
4. The lapels should stay flat
Double-breasted jackets usually feature peak lapels, which help create a broader, more confident upper-body shape. The lapels should sit flat and clean with no rolling, buckling or lifting around the chest.
5. The jacket length should feel balanced
A double-breasted jacket generally looks best when it has enough length to balance the wider front. It should not feel cropped unless the design is intentionally cut that way.
The hem should sit cleanly around the seat and create a proportionate line with the trousers.
How should the trousers fit?
The trousers should sit comfortably at the waist and fall cleanly through the thigh. A modern tailored fit can taper towards the ankle, but it should not cling to the leg.
At the hem, a small break or little to no break usually creates the cleanest finish with a double-breasted jacket. The exact length will depend on your footwear and the look you prefer.
How much shirt cuff should show?
A small amount of shirt cuff showing beneath the jacket sleeve gives a polished finish. Around 0.5 to 1.5 cm is a useful guide, although personal preference and arm length will affect the final result.
The key is consistency. One sleeve should not appear noticeably longer than the other.
Should a double-breasted suit feel tight?
No. A double-breasted suit should feel fitted and structured, but you should still be able to move comfortably. If the buttons strain, the lapels lift or the fabric pulls heavily across the chest, the jacket is too tight.
Likewise, too much excess fabric through the waist or back can make the suit lose the sharp silhouette that makes double-breasted tailoring so effective.
Can a ready-to-wear double-breasted suit be altered?
Yes. Ready-to-wear gives you a strong starting point, and alterations can then refine areas such as sleeve length, trouser length and waist shape where appropriate.
This is why trying the suit on properly matters. The right base size is more important than trying to force a smaller size for a tighter look.
When does a double-breasted suit work best?
Double-breasted suits work particularly well for weddings, formal events, business, race days and occasions where you want a stronger, more structured look. They can also be styled more casually with knitwear or an open-neck shirt depending on the fabric and colour.
